5 Reasons Why Our Internship Is Like No Other

The Northwestern Mutual college financial representative internship is a Top 100 internship program* that has developed some of our most successful financial advisors and leaders. The program is designed to give students skills they will use for life, including financial planning, how to build and run a business, and develop relationships with clients. Still wondering if it’s right for you? Below are a few reasons why our internship is like no other.

#1: We make business building a core aspect of this role

Our college financial representative internship program is designed to give students the opportunity to see what it’s like to be a full-time financial advisor and learn business-building fundamentals.

At Northwestern Mutual, financial advisors are independent business owners who help deliver financial security for their clients through a planning approach that brings together both risk and wealth management. Their businesses are based on what they put into them and the formula to success is determined by how productive they are and the quality of service they deliver to clients year after year.

We know what building a successful business looks like and that is why those skills are a focus in this role.

#2: You get to build deep relationships with your clients

As a college financial representative, you will get the opportunity to do many of the same things a full-time advisor does, which includes building relationships with clients. After you go through our in-depth training program and establish a client base, you will meet with your prospective clients to understand their goals and identify how you can support them based on their unique circumstances. Then you will create a personalized plan for them, implement it and provide ongoing counsel and support, adjusting their plan as needed.

Building relationships with clients is critical to our business and you will have the opportunity to impact their lives and futures every day.

Rest assured, you will have a team of advisors and teammates that will support you every step of the way.

#3: We support your success and provide you with a mentor

College financial representatives go through an award-winning development program that’s interwoven throughout the internship – focused on communication skills, positioning financial solutions, technology, and financial concepts to use with clients.

You will be given personal mentorship with a full-time advisor to help you excel in this role. Additionally, you will receive daily coaching and practice sessions with full-time advisors and tenured leaders who are invested in your success.

Students who go through our college financial representative internship program come out with skills they use for life: financial planning, how to build and run a business, how to build and foster relationships with clients and much more.

This internship has developed some of our strongest and most accomplished financial advisors in our company and the industry.

#4: You are compensated for your hard work with unlimited potential

The College financial representative internship reflects the full-time financial representative role, where income is tied to commissions based on performance. It is comprised of commissions on policies delivered to clients as well as weekly incentives for completing business-building activities and is not limited by a salary cap, as regular salaried or hourly internships often are.

#5 You have an opportunity to convert to this career full-time after graduation

At Northwestern Mutual, we developed our program to potentially be the start of your career, and we want you to transition to a full-time role with us. We invest in your success, not just for the summer or a year, but for your entire career and after your internship is over, and if mutually agreeable and with the right credentials, you can move into a full-time financial advisor role.
